A Swedish studio that stayed independent and slot-only, with Book of Dead as its signature title.
Play'n GO has remained privately held and has stayed with a single product: slots. Book of Dead, released in 2016, became one of the most widely offered online slots in Europe and is the title most often used to illustrate how a single game can define a studio's commercial position for a decade.
The company was also early to build games for mobile portrait play rather than adapting desktop layouts, at a point when much of the industry was still treating mobile as a secondary screen. That decision aligned with how players actually came to use the product.
Its independence is itself notable in a sector where most successful studios have been acquired by larger groups, and it means commercial terms with operators are negotiated directly rather than through a parent.
The companies that design and build the games themselves, principally slots. They are paid a share of the revenue their games generate rather than a licence fee, which is why a studio's commercial fortunes depend on a small number of titles performing across many operators.
