A studio that turned its own development framework into a product for other studios.
Yggdrasil was founded in 2013 by a former operator executive and built a reputation for technically ambitious slots. Its more interesting contribution is structural: it packaged its internal development and compliance framework, GATI, and offered it to other studios under the YG Masters programme, so that a small developer could build a game and inherit the certification, distribution and regulatory configuration work that would otherwise be prohibitive.
That model addresses the real barrier for a new studio. Writing a good slot is difficult; getting it certified in a dozen jurisdictions, configured for each market's rules and integrated with every aggregator is more difficult still, and it is where most independent studios fail.
The companies that design and build the games themselves, principally slots. They are paid a share of the revenue their games generate rather than a licence fee, which is why a studio's commercial fortunes depend on a small number of titles performing across many operators.
