The largest privately held operator, and the company that made in-play betting the centre of the sportsbook.
bet365 was founded in 2000 by Denise Coates, financed initially against the family's retail betting shops, and has remained in family ownership with no stock market listing. It is unusual in the industry for having grown to global scale without acquisitions, mergers or outside equity.
Its technical contribution was in-play betting. Pricing markets continuously during a match, at scale and across thousands of events, required streaming, low-latency pricing and risk management that did not exist when the company started building it, and the resulting product changed what a sportsbook is: most betting turnover in football now happens after kick-off rather than before.
Because it is private, bet365 publishes far less than its listed competitors, and estimates of its size rely on filed accounts rather than quarterly reporting. It holds licences across the major regulated markets and has expanded into American states individually rather than through a casino joint venture.
The companies that hold the relationship with the player: they take the stake, hold the account, pay the winnings and carry the licence in each market they serve. Almost everything else in this directory exists to supply them.
