The leading sports betting brand in Germany, built on a franchised retail network alongside its online business.
Tipico holds the position in German sports betting that bet365 holds in Britain, and it reached it by a different route: a large network of franchised betting shops, visible in city centres and tied to local ownership, supporting an online and mobile product. In a market where advertising is permitted but trust in online gambling has been lower than in Britain or the Nordics, physical presence mattered.
The company is also a case study in regulatory patience. Germany spent more than a decade without a workable licensing framework for online gambling, during which operators served the market under contested legal arrangements. Tipico continued to invest through that period and was licensed when the interstate treaty took effect in 2021, by which time its retail and brand position was established.
Germany's treaty licence does not cover online table games, so Tipico's casino offering there is confined to the products the federal licence allows, a constraint that applies equally to every licensee in the market.
The companies that hold the relationship with the player: they take the stake, hold the account, pay the winnings and carry the licence in each market they serve. Almost everything else in this directory exists to supply them.
