What this authority does

Nevada has regulated casino gaming since the 1930s and created the Gaming Control Board in 1955, with the Gaming Commission added shortly after. The two-body structure, an investigative board and a decision-making commission, has been copied in several jurisdictions, and Nevada's approach to suitability, which examines the finances, associations and history of individuals behind an applicant rather than only the company, set the pattern that most American and several international regulators follow.

Online gambling in Nevada is narrow. Interactive gaming is limited to poker; online casino games are not offered. Sports betting has a much longer history there than anywhere else in the United States, because Nevada was exempt from the federal prohibition that applied elsewhere until 2018, though mobile betting accounts have traditionally required in-person registration at a licensed property.

Nevada's importance to the modern industry is also commercial: a large share of slot machine and casino system manufacturing is licensed there, so a Nevada manufacturer licence remains a common prerequisite for supplying equipment across the United States.
